Industry-supported 48-month PhD studentships

(Two fully-funded scholarships available at the EPSRC and SFI CDT in Sustainable Chemistry: Atoms-2-Products)

The EPSRC and SFI CDT in Sustainable Chemistry: Atoms-2-Products would like to invite suitably qualified and highly motivated applicants interested in working in the two of our research thematic areas “Machine Learning Supported Catalysis” and “Sustainable Gelators and Rheology Modifiers”.

Machine Learning Supported Catalysis and Synthesis

Catalytic formation of C-H, C-C and C-Heteratom bonds is the invisible engine that drives formation of the molecules our society needs. Classical catalyst optimisation requires thousands of uni-varient optimisations typically moderated by humans. Self-learning algorithms offer opportunities to identify unique patterns in such complex data allowing faster process optimisation.

The successful candidate will work in partnership with a newly established multi-disciplinary team comprising synthetic, data science and computational chemists targeting leading edge developments in reaction optimisation.

Sustainable Gelators

Gelators are an important class of molecules that are used as additives to modify rheological performance in materials ranging from mechanical lubricants, film forming polymers and food. There is an urgent need to move away from petrochemical based additives. This activity will design and prepare sustainable routes to low molecular-mass organic gelators and performance modifiers for application in multiple industry settings.

We are looking to recruit students interested in a wide range of research areas within the fields of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering who are interested in working closely with an industrial sponsor to develop new sustainable technologies/products for their business. We are particularly looking for applicants who are interested to develop projects in the fields of synthesis and catalysis, process engineering, flow chemistry, process modelling, electro/photochemistry, biocatalysts, organic materials chemistry, preparation of renewable materials and analytical methods.

Both studentships are part of the EPSRC and SFI Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Chemistry Atoms-2-Products: An Integrated Approach and will take place in the globally leading Carbon Neutral Laboratories of the University of Nottingham:

Candidates should hold one of the following:

  • A minimum of an upper second class honours degree from a 4-year undergraduate course in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences, Natural Sciences, Biotechnology or Pharmacy.
  • A 3-year undergraduate course in one of the above disciplines plus a Masters degree and/or one year experience in industry.

The EPSRC and SFI CDT in Sustainable Chemistry has one scholarship available in each of the above thematic areas. Please specify which research theme you wish your application to be considered for. Studentship support is for a 4-year programme which could include a study period/internship working in industry or in the labs of a scientific partner.
