EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioenergy

Programme

Intergrated PhD and MSc in Bioenergy.

Duration

4 years.

Funding

A full standard studentship consists of academic fees (£4,195 in Session 2017/18), together with a maintenance grant (£14,553 in Session 2017/18) paid at standard Research Council rates and a Research Training Support Grant (RTSG). Generally, UK students will be eligible for a full award and other EU applicants will be eligible for an award paying academic fees and RTSG only, except in cases where residency in the UK has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the programme of study. Places are available for students who have their own funding.

We welcome scholarship applications from all suitably-qualified candidates, but UK black and minority ethnic (BME) researchers are currently under-represented in our Postgraduate Research community, and we would therefore particularly encourage applications from UK BME candidates. All scholarships will be awarded on the basis of merit.

Entry requirements

A degree equivalent to a UK upper second class honours (2:1), or higher, in engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics or environmental science.
Positions available for 2018 in our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioenergy

With climate change presenting the greatest global challenge of our time, the search is on for alternatives to fossil fuels. Bioenergy from wood, waste, agricultural residues and energy crops is a major global energy renewable source. However, there are challenges concerning technical performance, cost effectiveness, sustainable production, food security and biodiversity. Our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Bioenergy, which has developed from our successful DTC in Low Carbon Technologies, addresses these challenges. The first 18 months of the programme offers taught modules, interdisciplinary team projects, interdisciplinary research training and industrial placements. Research within our CDT falls within or cross our four themes:

  • Feedstocks, Processing and Safety
  • Conversion
  • Products, Utilisation and Impacts
  • Sustainability and Whole Systems
