Within the next few years the number of devices connected to each other and the Internet will outnumber humans by almost 5:1. These connected devices will underpin everything from healthcare to transport to energy and manufacturing. At the same time, this growth is not just in the number or variety of devices, but also in the ways they communicate and share information with each other, building hyper-connected cyber-physical infrastructures that span most aspects of people's lives.
There is an urgent need for future leaders capable of developing innovative solutions that will keep society one step ahead of malicious actors intent on compromising security, privacy and identity and hence eroding trust in infrastructures.
The Universities of Bristol and Bath have launched a new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Cyber Security. The ‘Trust-Identity-Privacy-Security in large scale infrastructures’ (TIPS-at-scale) CDT will train the next generation of leaders to tackle the TIPS challenges faced by infrastructures that serve society at-large and on which our daily lives depend.
Doctoral students within the CDT will gain interdisciplinary research training and skills to help tackle these challenges at scale - developing both the technical skills needed while simultaneously studying how to understand the challenges as being fundamentally human and social too.
The CDT provides funding for a four-year programme of study, including enhanced stipend (£18K per year) and £2,500 per year training / travel. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on realistic large-scale infrastructures especially the state-of-the-art critical infrastructure and Internet of Things testbed - one of the few facilities of its kind internationally - at Bristol. At the same time, they will take part in innovation challenges with entrepreneurs in residence at the Bath Innovation Centre and Bristol’s Engine Shed - both part of SetSquared, the world’s number one university-business incubator. There are also extensive opportunities for placements/internships in industry and major international research centres.
We are seeking to recruit students from both technical and non-technical subjects who have (at least) a good 2.1. A willingness to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries (e.g. computer science, psychology, criminology, mathematics) to address real world problems is key.
