Fully funded studentships at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Functional Industrial Coatings
Engineering Doctorate (EngD) studentships available starting October 2023
The CDT in Functional Industrial Coatings at Swansea University is offering 9 fully funded four-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) studentships.
Funding
Studentships cover a full award and include a tax-free stipend (currently £22,000 p.a.) and tuition fees, each for a period of four years, subject to meeting University progression requirements.
Also, a generous budget is available to support training, project costs, industry placements and travel to enable you to network and showcase your research at an international conference.
About the CDT
The CDT is focused on providing 50 EngD Research Engineers during the lifespan of the grant with the technical and research excellence to develop and manufacture new functional industrial coatings and to gain the professional skills to become industry and academic leaders.
It builds on the successes of existing Centres and is supported by multinational companies including BASF, Tata Steel UK, Beckers International Coatings and NSG Group.
Coatings are abundant throughout day to day life and ensure the function, durability and aesthetics of millions of products and processes. The use of coatings is essential across multiple sectors including construction, automotive, aerospace, packaging and energy; however, today there is a focus for them to be sustainability sourced and easily recycled.
What does the EngD involve?
The EngD is a professional 4-year degree that combines the scientific research of a PhD with the business skills needed to thrive in a competitive workplace. It is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) on behalf of the Engineering Council and can contribute towards attaining professional registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Our research projects cover everything from substrate and coating formulations through to corrosion performance and end of life. All are determined and sponsored by an industrial partner with support from both academic and industrial supervisors.
Alongside your research project you will undertake technical modules, including:
- Substrate
- Coating Formulation
- Functional Coatings
- Deposition of Functional Materials
- Degradation of Materials
In addition, you will receive research and professional skills training (Interpersonal Skills, Entrepreneurship, Economic Appraisal of Engineering Projects and Leadership and Management) to enhance your employability.
You will be based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and join a cohort of around 60 individuals. The Faculty has a vibrant research environment and there is opportunity to work with robust research groups, including SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre, Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating and Corrosion and Coatings and to use the fantastic state-of-the-art research facilities.

Entry Requirements
Candidates must normally hold at minimum (or expect to obtain by the start date) an undergraduate degree at 2.1 level (or Non-UK equivalent as defined by Swansea University), or a combination of degree and equivalent experience to the same level.

English Language requirements: If applicable – IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.0 in each individual component) or Swansea recognised equivalent. Details on the Swansea University English Language entry policy can be found here.
Studentships for October 2023 entry are open to candidates of any nationality; however, please note:
- International students (including EU countries) can apply, but due to UKRI funding rules, no more than 30% of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Functional Industrial Coatings projects can be allocated to international students. Once the cap is reached, studentships will only be open to applicants eligible for tuition fees at the UK rate, as defined by UKCISA regulations.
