About Us

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Smart Medical Imaging at King’s College London and Imperial College London is a successful partnership of two world-class institutions to provide PhD training within an embedded hospital environment in central London. Our students benefit from state-of-the-art research laboratories across both universities and close interaction with healthcare industry.

Our vision is to train the next generation of medical imaging researchers, leveraging the full potential of medical imaging for healthcare through integration of artificial intelligence, targeted, responsive and safer imaging probes, and cutting-edge emerging and affordable imaging solutions within a unique multi-disciplinary environment of imaging scientists, engineers, clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

PhD Training Programme

We offer an integrated PhD programme with dedicated training in transferable skills, responsible research and innovation, and entrepreneurship. Our students also enjoy placement opportunities in world-class international labs and in the healthcare industry, maximising their career opportunities and employability. The training programme follows a dedicated cohort approach: around 15 students are joining each year, and closely interact and collaborate across disciplines from day 1.

Committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment, the Centre particularly encourages applications from communities that are currently under-represented in STEM and academia.

Applicants will normally be expected to have a first class, distinction or high upper second-class degree in relevant subjects, including mathematics, computer science, engineering, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, or biology. We may also consider other qualifications and all applications will be assessed on an individual case.

Funding

The Centre funds around 10-15 studentships every year. Each PhD studentship is funded for 4 years and includes tuition fees and a competitive tax-free stipend set at the UKRI London-weighting (rate for 2023/24: £20,662). Students also receive a generous allowance for research consumables, conference travel, international lab visits and industry placements.

• Access to large UK research initiatives and infrastructure, such as the new £10m London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare, the NVIDIA AI initiative at King’s, the new London high-field 7T MR centre based at King’s and the Imperial White City Campus.

In line with UKRI guidance on eligibility, the Centre will offer studentships to home and international students (including EU/EEA/Swiss nationals), which include a stipend, project consumables and student fees.
