EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Analysis and its Applications

Analysis and its Applications fully funded CDT is the four-year programme associated with the Maxwell Institute Graduate School in Analysis and its Applications (MIGSAA), a Centre for Doctoral Training that provides high quality instruction in analysis and the applications of analysis to a wide range of areas.

The programme is a collaboration with University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University.

PhD study in MIGSAA may be undertaken with over 40 supervisors on topics ranging from pure analysis to applied mathematics relevant for scientific, engineering, environmental or social challenges.

Most projects will relate to one of the following themes:

• Partial Differential Equations (PDEs)
• Harmonic Analysis
• Stochastic Analysis
• Interdisciplinary and Industrial Mathematical Modelling
• Numerical Analysis
• Continuum Mechanics
• Pure and Applied Probability

Unlike a standard PhD, standard MIGSAA students are admitted to the programme (rather than with a specific supervisor), and take PhD training courses and projects over their first year, which help shape their perspective, leading to a match with a supervisor in the second half of Year 1. However, we also have an Industry Stream where students apply for a particular industry-related project from the start. The research project directed by the supervisor is still the centrepiece of the PhD, but this is augmented by an on-going training programme in Years 2-4 of the student’s studies.

The MIGSAA cohort will consist of approximately 12 students per year, however students are also part of the larger PhD community at both the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, with access to supervisors from both institutions as well as MIGSAA's industrial partners.

Training and Support

Mathematics is a discipline of high intellect with connections stretching across all the scientific disciplines and beyond, and in Edinburgh you can be certain of thriving in a rich academic setting. The collaboration between MIGSAA's partner institutions maximises the opportunities available for students to gain a breadth of knowledge from leading experts.

Our intention is that all MIGSAA students gain awareness of the full intellectual spectrum of research in analysis and its applications, including familiarity with theoretical issues, stochastic techniques, numerical methods and examples of how analysis problems impact the sciences and engineering. Therefore we expect all students to take some training spanning these areas – even though their eventual PhD thesis may specialise in only one or two.

Facilities

In the first year, the MIGSAA cohort is based at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in the centre of Edinburgh. This affords a number of opportunities to engage with the international mathematical community.

MIGSAA students are encouraged to travel and participate in conferences and seminars. You’ll also be in the right place in Edinburgh to meet distinguished researchers from all over the world who are attracted to conferences held at the collaborating institutions and the various collaborative centres based here. You’ll find opportunities for networking that could have far-reaching effects on your career in mathematics.

Further, MIGSAA students are fully registered at both collaborating institutions and entitled to use the facilities of both.

Funding

MIGSAA applicants accepted onto the programme are fully funded.

Doctoral Stipend for 2018/19 is £14,777
Research Councils UK Indicative Fee Level for 2018/19 is £4,260

2018/19 Overseas fee rates £20,100. Stipend is £14,777.

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from women and men who have, or expect to shortly have, a very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent), in mathematics or a closely related subject.
