The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Science, based at the University of Edinburgh, has 10 funded PhD studentships available per year.

About Data Science

Data Science is the study of computational principles, methods, and systems for extracting knowledge from data. Large data sets are now generated by almost every activity in science, society, and commerce — ranging from molecular biology to social media, from sustainable energy to health care.

Data science asks: How can we efficiently find patterns in these vast streams of data? This problem cuts across many research areas:

  • machine learning focuses on finding patterns and making predictions from data;
  • databases are needed for efficiently accessing data and ensuring its quality;
  • ideas from algorithms and optimization are required to build systems that scale to big data streams;
  • natural language processing, computer vision, and speech processing are each needed for analysis of different types of unstructured data.
10 funded PhD studentships in Data Science available

Recently, these distinct disciplines have begun to converge into a single field called data science. Our programme will allow you to specialise and perform advanced research in one of these areas, while gaining breadth and practical experience throughout data science.

The CDT in Data Science will train a new generation of data scientists with the technical skills and interdisciplinary awareness necessary to become R&D leaders in this emerging area.

Our four-year PhD programme combines Master's level course and project work with independent PhD-level research. The Centre features over 60 world-renowned faculty across data science. You will also benefit from interacting with more than 30 industrial partners.

Students who will have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering or related areas are encouraged to apply. Due to funding constraints, the majority of the funding is for UK and EU students. Non-EU students should read carefully the additional information on the CDT website.

About the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh

The School of Informatics is Europe’s largest computing department, highest rated for research and ranked ‘excellent’ in the UK according to the most recent research assessment exercises. The size and reputation of the Schools means that it is big enough to provide outstanding facilities for students which in turn attracts some of the brightest minds to study and teach there.

The School also has an extremely successful track record for generating spin-out activity with an estimated 44% of all University of Edinburgh spin outs generated from the School of Informatics alone since 2008. Recently awarded a Silver Athena SWAN Award, it is also recognised as an institution with a commitment to advancing women’s careers.

The programme is now closed. Funding and deadlines for the September 2019 programme are yet to be confirmed.
