EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Distributed Algorithms

Are you looking for an exciting, supportive and challenging research environment where you get to work on complex data challenges, in collaboration with an industry partner, as well as having the support and expertise of University of Liverpool academic supervisors?

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Distributed Algorithms (the CDT) delivers an exciting and innovative multi-disciplinary data science, AI and machine learning PhD programme, bringing together diverse areas of expertise to train students in the skills and experiences that will ensure that they, as tomorrow’s leaders in the theory and computational application of Distributed Algorithms, will gain world-leading expertise to meet the pressing need for highly trained data scientists

Working together with our project partners, the CDT’s research will bring about positive societal impact by enabling industrial and government organisations to better provide and protect the world's population by co-defining ‘where’ and ‘how’ future algorithms will be distributed across tomorrows hardware.

Our vision is that by the end of the programme, our graduates will be on a trajectory to become future leaders in the field of Distributed Algorithms meeting the needs of government, academia and industry.

The DA CDT is funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the University of Liverpool and our project partners, working alongside STFC Hartree and the Alan Turing Institute.

We want to hear from you!

If you possess ambition and drive, have an inquisitive nature and thrive on collaboration we would love to hear from you. There will be approximately 15 funded studentships available for an October 2021 start date.

EPSRC Distributed Algorithms CDT Cohort 1 – Autumn 2019

Why choose the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral training in Distributed Algorithms?

  • Funded four-year studentships co-defined with a project partner
  • A generous stipend for living costs (as well as additional support for your studies)
  • Individual training and development opportunities including a 3-6-month placement with your industrial partner
  • Engagement with internationally-leading supercomputing centre, STFC’s Hartree Centre
  • Access to state-of-the-art computing hardware from IBM Research
  • Interdisciplinary cohort training and development experiences delivered by Alan Turing Institute
  • Beneficial cohort environment, with the opportunity to work on shared challenges

Students will engage in various training activities alongside their individual PhD project, ensuring that not only are they trained in state-of-the-art data science and computing techniques, but also that they acquire an understanding of the value and benefits of collaborative, interdisciplinary working.

We don’t expect our applicants to have experience in both data science and computing but welcome applicants with a background in a related field and the interest to develop themselves in both Future Computing and Data Science.

Eligibility, Funding, Deadlines, FAQs and Application Instructions can be found on the CDT website.

Hear from our current PhD Students!

Theofilos, Cohort 1 CDT student
Elinor, Cogort 2 CDT Student

“Being a CDT student gives me the opportunity to do my PhD as part of a cohort which means that I learn not only to accomplish things on my own but also I learn the value of being a member of a team.”

Theofilos, Cohort 1 CDT student sponsored by MBDA

“When I was searching for a PhD position, I was keen to join a CDT. I wanted to be part of a cohort and to have the opportunity to learn from others’ expertise and to share experiences and results. I wanted to work on this project because I have a background in Physics and Computer Science. I had developed an interest in data science, in particular, how it could be used to solve real-world problems. I was also keen to study in Liverpool, a city with such a rich history and such vibrant cultural opportunities.”

Elinor, Cohort 2 CDT Student sponsored by Leonardo
