We are recruiting graduate Engineers from all disciplines and Chemistry/Biochemistry graduates to join our ground-breaking Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy Storage and Its Applications at the Universities of Sheffield and Southampton in October 2017. This brand new Centre is funded by the EPSRC and aims to tackle industrial challenges and develop new technologies and skills that will enable the UK to meet its low carbon targets.
As a student in the CDT you will be able to choose a PhD project that either aligns closely with a single partner, or a generic project that is of fundamental application to all industry partners, in a leading Russell Group university environment. Our graduates will have excellent employment prospects, as the energy sector has a significant unmet demand for doctoral employees with relevant experience, to fill the national void in technical development, technical operation and consultancy.
Directly addressing the UK government’s Energy Storage priority area, our graduates will ensure the UK can play a major role in the delivery of a global low carbon economy.

The CDT is a training and research centre for a select group of PhD students, in an annual cohort of 10 students, each taking a 4 year studentship with a team of academic and industrial partners. The Centre brings the brightest postgraduate research engineers, leading academic staff, technical experts and major industry partners together in a unique world-leading research environment. The students will tackle the challenging problems that face industry today, and develop new technologies and skills to benefit all partners.

The CDT programme is revolutionary, as student cohorts will undertake a world class research project and receive a comprehensive taught education programme in energy storage to become a multi-skilled graduate familiar with international energy statistics analysis, experiences from group based design projects, have had hands-on experience of operating a University owned grid connected commercial battery facility and benefit from being assigned to an industrial supervisor throughout their doctoral study.
The CDT received substantial funding from the EPSRC in 2013, who identified energy storage as a UK priority area with a major skills shortage. This funding compliments our Grid Connected Energy Storage Research Demonstrator, which also received £5M of EPSRC funding in 2013, and provides a full-scale 11kV grid connected energy storage based facility, together with some specific satellite test facilities, to meet small scale research requirements at 415V (for testing phase imbalance, voltage and frequency control for example), and a grid-connected 2MW battery storage system located at the WPD site at Willenhall.
The University of Sheffield has also invested heavily in two major infrastructure projects to provide its Engineering students with world-class facilities for research and teaching, including an Engineering Graduate School for postgraduates which opened in January 2014, and a new £81M Engineering Teaching college which is scheduled to open in 2015.
