Fully-funded 4-year PhD/EngDs in Ultrasonic Engineering: Open for applications until 31 January

The universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde have combined research expertise to lead CDT FUSE with the ambition to create a training and research powerhouse in ultrasonics.

Ultrasonics is the science and technology of sound at frequencies above the audible range and is vitally important across many sectors from robotics in the oil and gas industry to medical imaging.

For autumn 2021 entry, 10 studentships are available.

Join a cohort with 20+ academics and 30+ innovative micro-company and multinational organisations to work on doctoral projects that are aligned during the training phase.

FUSE CDT is hosting a Virtual Open Day for offer holders and prospective applicants on 26 May from 11:00 - 12:30.

Programme and benefit

Each cohort of researchers will benefit from:

  • 4-year stipend ~£15,245 p.a.
  • 1-year foundation training in ultrasonics
  • 3-year project in collaboration with at least one CDT external partner
  • industry exposure to real-world problems and future employers
  • placement opportunities, conference funding
  • professional skills development: FUSE is IMECHE MPDS accredited, accelerating the pathway to professional registration as a Chartered Engineer
  • option to gain STEM Ambassador status

Key areas for applied ultrasonics include:

  • medical and industrial imaging
  • treatments and processes
  • cleaning
  • robotics
  • sonar
  • haptics
  • energy transfer
  • communications

The multiple needs of these sectors will be met by novel ultrasonics research in:

  • materials
  • microfabricated devices
  • microelectronics
  • instrumentation
  • software and applications

Funding and eligibility

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK Home applicants and a stipend at the Research Council rate (£15,245 for Session 2020/21). To be eligible for a fully-funded UK Home studentship, you must be a UK citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past three years, or an EU applicant with ‘settled status’ (having lived in the UK for five years) or ‘pre-settled status’ (having lived in the UK for a minimum of three years). Candidates with indefinite leave to remain or enter the UK are also eligible for funding.

Applicants must have or expect to obtain the equivalent of a 1st or 2.1 degree in an appropriate engineering or science discipline.

There are a limited number of international studentships available to exceptional candidates.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

FUSE has placed EDI at the heart of its activities, believing that this is the way to increase research productivity and quality and to enhance societal and economic impact.

We offer part-time studentships, funding to support applications from under-represented backgrounds, SIMD bursaries, childcare support for conference attendance, flexible working for carers, as well as prompting a work-life balance.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the University of Glasgow online application system. You will be required to submit a cover letter, CV, two references and your transcript/degree certificate. All candidate interviews will be conducted by video conference.
