EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Industrially Focused Mathematical Modelling

Twelve fully funded doctoral studentships available for October 2018 start

The InFoMM CDT provides the ideal staging ground if you are a mathematician, or mathematically-oriented scientist, who wants to expand your arsenal of mathematical techniques, improve team-working and communication skills and tackle real-world problems from industry.

  • You should have, or expect to have, a top degree in mathematics or other theoretical subject (an MSc, a first class undergraduate degree, or overseas equivalent).
  • You should be self-motivated with good interpersonal skills and want to work in an interdisciplinary and interactive environment.
  • Background and training structure

    The University of Oxford’s Mathematical Institute has a long tradition of mathematical modelling and scientific computing this four-year doctoral degree builds on that tradition.

    This four year degree has two components. The first year programme comprises two blocks of material taught by academics punctuated by two Industrial Enrichment Programmes, delivered by the CDT's industrial partners. There is a 'light-touch' assessment of each of the academic courses in the first year. These are followed by two ten-week periods of research focused on well-defined company problems, at least one of which will be based at a company.

    You will choose a project aligned with one of the CDT's partner companies for your main research topic, which will be carried out during years two to four. Projects are likely to involve a subset of the following areas: Differential equations; Asymptotic methods; Numerical analysis; Scientific computing; Fluid and solid mechanics; Discrete mathematics; Applied mathematical finance; Data analytics. These projects will be supervised by Oxford academics and company representatives. You will spend around one month each year visiting the company. You will write a short dissertation during your second year which will be assessed to determine whether you can continue on the course..

Studentship nationality requirements

At least five of our studentships can be awarded to successful applicants regardless of nationality. The remaining studentships are restricted to UK nationals. Full details are given on our website.
