EPSRC 4-year PhD studentships

  • Applications are invited for up to 10 studentships starting in October 2018
  • Stipends £15,590 (tax free)

The Centre for Doctoral Training offers four-year PhD studentships within The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Emergent Macromolecular Therapies, hosted at UCL from the Department of Biochemical Engineering. The Centre acts as the focus for a national and international network of leading users and academics in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and provides strong support for UK industry.

The research programme is aligned closely to industrial needs and the Centre’s industrial collaborators include major multinational pharmaceutical companies, small biopharmaceutical companies and companies in the supply chain.

The user group is made up of companies, sector groups and networking organisations and provides guidance to the Centre on its research programme, potential impact of its research and transfer of the technology developed. An independent advisory board provides advice to the Centre on longer-term strategic issues and on assessing Centre progress.

Research Projects

Research projects will address challenges across the Centre remit, with most strategically aligned to address the following topics:

  • Decision-support software tools and algorithms to support production planning, portfolio management and supply chain management for targeted medicines
  • Manufacturing process, analysis and control innovations that will potentially lead to lower cost of goods, or improved process control for products targeted to stratified populations
  • Process, design, composition and analytical innovations addressing challenges associated with the formulation of stratified protein medicines
  • Process, design, control and analytical innovations for T-cell manufacturing

PhD projects are suitable for candidates with a good first degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, computer science, chemistry, biochemical engineering, and chemical engineering.

Studentships will be based across UCL in addition to one or more collaborative partners of the Centre, which currently include Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Cambridge, University of Delaware (USA), DeMontford University, Imperial College London, University of Hertfordshire, University of Leeds, University of Lancaster, University of Manchester, University of Strathclyde, University of Warwick and University of Western Australia. All students will receive structured training delivered by the collaborating partners.

Full scholarships are available to home students, or EU students resident in the UK for the preceding 3 years. Partial scholarships are available to EU students not resident in the UK, although we can offer 10% of our full scholarships to such students. International students able to provide funding are also eligible.
