EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Modelling Heterogeneous Systems

Call for Applications for fully funded places on a 4-year integrated PhD programme in Materials Modelling

HetSys is a new Centre for Doctoral Training in Modelling Heterogeneous Systems based at the University of Warwick. It is recruiting creative people from across the physical sciences who enjoy using their mathematical skills and thinking flexibly to challenge current state-of-the-art in computational modelling of heterogeneous, real-world systems. There are exciting interdisciplinary PhD research projects available to start in October 2019 across a range of research themes including nanoscale devices, new catalysts, superalloys, smart fluids, laser-plasma interactions etc. HetSys’ bespoke training programme, which is integrated with the PhD research, is structured to enable its students to become high-quality computational scientists who are comfortable working in interdisciplinary environments, have excellent communication skills, and well prepared for a wide range of future careers in areas where there is demonstrable need. The HetSys training programme and research ethos has 3 central components:

  1. Span disciplinary barriers. The most challenging real-world heterogeneous systems are intrinsically multidisciplinary, requiring integration of a diverse range of modelling methods.
  2. Incorporate uncertainty in modelling. Training in uncertainty quantification enables students not only to perform simulations, but also to quantitatively assess their reliability.
  3. Promote robust Research Software Engineering (RSE). Training in sustainable software development enhances software usability and extends its lifetime.
Modelling Heterogeneous Systems

The Centre is built around a closely knit, highly collaborative team of academics from five science departments (Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Mathematics and the Warwick Manufacturing Group), networked via two well-established research centres Warwick’s Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC) and the Warwick Centre for Predictive Modelling (WCPM). With its international and industry project partners HetSys develops talented PhD students to inspire new ideas, approaches and innovation and become future research and technology leaders.


Applicants should hold or expect to be awarded a first or upper second class honours BSc, MSc or MPhys, MChem, MEng, etc. in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Materials Science or in an appropriate related discipline. To be eligible for a fully funded studentship, you must be a UK citizen; or an EU national who has been resident in the UK for the past three years.
