EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistics and Operational Research in Partnership with Industry (STOR-i)

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistics and Operational Research in Partnership with Industry (STOR-i) based at Lancaster University, has 14 fully-funded PhD studentships available to start in October 2019. This forms part of the recently announced £10million investment by EPSRC, Lancaster University and industrial partners to fund the third generation of the Centre.

Established in 2010, STOR-i has developed an international reputation for its unique training programme, using industrial challenge as the catalyst for methodological advance. Our cohort-based, 4 year scheme offers a distinctive PhD training experience, which provides an opportunity to:

  • be part of an exciting community of like-minded peers;
  • work directly with leading industry partners;
  • be mentored by internationally recognised researcher leaders;
  • make significant scientific and industrial impact with your research;
  • be part of international research teams.

This next generation of our programme builds on our experience of training 100 PhD students in partnership with industry since 2010. Graduates from the Centre have embarked on exciting careers in academia and industry, working with numerous partner companies and other organisations including British Airways, EDF Energy and the Williams Formula 1 Team.

Many of our PhD projects are developed and involve substantial collaboration with our industrial partners, providing a unique research and training experience and an exciting opportunity for you to develop mathematical innovation inspired by contemporary real-world challenge. Partners include BT, ONS, Rolls Royce, Royal Mail, Shell and Tesco, and academic collaborations with leading universities including MIT, Oslo, Dublin and Northwestern.

Applications open for October 2019

We have fully-funded studentships available for UK and EU applicants to start in October 2019. Studentships include a generous tax-free stipend (£17,009 in year 1), fees and an allowance to support research related activities. Stipends rise up to £20,009 per year on successful progression to PhD at the end of the first year of the programme for students undertaking industry-funded PhD projects.
