EPSRC and MRC CDT in Sustainable Approaches to Biomedical Science: Responsible and Reproducible Research

Applications for entry in 2019-20 are now open

We welcome applications from graduates who wish to make an impact in the field of computational biomedical research. Our unique and pioneering 4-year PhD programme provides comprehensive training to graduates primarily from the physical sciences who wish to undertake research careers at the industrial interface in this exciting new interdisciplinary field. We train future innovators and research leaders who will pioneer major advances in biomedical science underpinning the development of novel therapies and drugs through the development of cutting edge computational approaches and well-engineered research software. Each of our students will gain the broad skillset needed to confront current and future biomedical research challenges in our three themes:

  • Computational and data-driven approaches to drug discovery
  • Cellular microscopy and image analysis underpinning biomedical discovery
  • Physiological modelling underpinning biomedical discovery

Underpinning the entire programme is an appreciation of the vital importance of taking a responsible and reproducible approach to computational biomedical research, and the programme therefore has a very strong emphasis on the development of well-engineered (open source) software to underpin these computational approaches.

The programme has been devised and delivered in collaboration with industry since 2009. The 22 industrial partners who supported the CDT’s third successful bid are AstraZeneca, BenevolentAI, Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, Diamond Light Source, Elsevier, e-Therapeutics, Exscientia, GE Healthcare, Hoffmann La Roche, Lhasa, LifeArc, Lurtis, MedImmune, Microsoft Research, Moffitt Cancer Center, Novo Nordisk, Oxford Drug Design, Perspectum Diagnostics, SimOmics, UCB, Unilever and Zegami. It is expected that each student will have both academic and industrial supervision.

A major advantage of this programme is that the choice of PhD project is not made until after the completion of two terms of taught modules covering the breadth of scientific knowledge and cutting-edge techniques needed to carry out successful research, followed by two short research projects with prospective PhD academic and industry supervisors, situated within groups across the University. Our students are then empowered to make a fully informed choice of substantive research project.

We invite applications from students from the physical life sciences who have received, or are on target to achieve, a strong 2:1 degree or above.

Full studentships are available for both Home and EU students.
