PhD Positions Available - Understanding Materials Interfaces in Systems for the Energy Transition

We welcome applications from candidates for October 2021 entry to work with our interdisciplinary team on a range of projects associated with the energy transition. The projects involve development of new operando tools and modelling approaches to study interface performance and stability in a range of systems (for geological carbon capture, hydrogen economy, energy storage, fuels and lubricants for e-vehicles). Up to 10 positions are available. The projects will be based at Imperial College with significant interaction with the project partners Diamond Light Source and Shell (;

Entry requirements

Ideally, you will hold, or be expected to achieve, a Master’s degree or a 4 year undergraduate degree at 2:1 level (or above) in a relevant subject, e.g. Material Science, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences or a related discipline. There are a range of projects available within the research programme and successful applicants will choose a project following discussions with the programme team and supervisors.


To be eligible for support, applicants must be ‘UK Residents' as defined by the EPSRC. The studentship is for 3.5 years starting as soon as possible and will provide full coverage of tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £17,609.
