ESRC Bloomsbury & East London DTP Health Studentships 2023 Entry

ESRC Bloomsbury & East London DTP Health Studentships 2023 Entry

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a member of UBEL, the UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). This is an ESRC-funded organisation which brings together five leading Social Science institutions to offer PhD studentships each year.

LSHTM offers a unique environment in which to undertake research training in public and global health thanks to our academic excellence, multidisciplinary work and worldwide collaborations.

UBEL is one of the largest ESRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships in the UK, offering studentships over a wide range of pathways in areas that span across the social sciences and economics.

In order to organise so many interdisciplinary and cross-institutional studentships, the DTP comprises 25 different pathways.

LSHTM lead pathways:

  • Demography pathway
  • Health and Wellbeing pathway

LSHTM member pathways:

  • Quantitative Social Science pathway
  • International Development pathway

Applicants who have research proposals that are suitable under any of the 25 pathways can apply via LSHTM if their supervisor is based at the School.

Award details:

  • Full fees + stipend
  • Open to all applicants (both ‘Home’ and ‘Overseas’ fee status)

Doctoral training programmes are able to offer up to 30% of total awards available to international applicants. International applicants will be expected to top up the studentship award with an alternative scholarship or bursary.

Eligibility:

These are studentships open to all applicants who meet the ESRC academic requirements:

  • For 1+3 awards you should normally have (or expect to achieve by 30 September 2023) an upper second or first class honours degree or a Master’s degree from a recognised UK university, or the equivalent qualification if gained outside the UK.
  • For +3 awards you must normally have (or expect to achieve by 30 September 2023) a Master’s degree with an appropriate level of research training.

The main variants of the awards are 1+3 (for applicants who do not have a relevant Masters), or +3 (for students who already have a Masters). Please note, it is possible that this award can be for 3, 3.25 or 3.5 years. LSHTM is not able to offer the +4 route on any of the pathways.

If you have more general enquiries regarding the ESRC UBEL at LSHTM, then please contact Simon Cohn in the first instance.

The deadline for preliminary applications is Wednesday 30 November 2022.
