ESRC PhD Studentships at Birkbeck

2020/21 Entry

Birkbeck is a research-intensive university based in central London. Birkbeck is part of the UCL, Bloomsbury and East London (UBEL) ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Applications for fully funded ESRC PhD studentships at Birkbeck are now open.

The deadline for UBEL preliminary applications is 6 January 2020 but some Birkbeck departments have internal deadlines earlier than this. It is essential to contact the prospective Birkbeck department and pathway leader in the first instance.

We are seeking PhD studentship applications in the following areas:

Archaeology and Heritage Studies

Disciplines include Archaeological Practice, Cultural Heritage Studies, Heritage Studies, Public Archaeology, Heritage Science and Sustainable Heritage.

Economics

Exceptionally strong and complementary expertise in the field of economics and finance.

Gender and Sexuality

Expertise in the areas of gender and: international development, psychosocial studies and sociology, law, media and cultural studies, and sexuality and history.

Health and Wellbeing

The psychology of health and wellbeing addressing education, child and family health and parenting support priorities to inform social policy.

Human Geography

Birkbeck offers expertise in critical human geography and environmental geography and is involved in collaborative projects in this area.

Law and Criminology

Birkbeck Law has a reputation for pioneering new fields of legal scholarship offering a strong critical, theoretically-driven and dynamic research culture and have a breadth of expertise and research interests.

Linguistics

With an emphasis on interdisciplinary methods, we seek to understand the nature and functions of language and communication in real-life contexts through rigorous, critical examination.

Politics and International Relations

Students follow their research interests with a distinctive emphasis determined by focus and methodological approach.

Psychosocial Studies

An interdisciplinary field drawing on critical frameworks to study the interconnections between individual subjectivities, group identities, and historical and contemporary social and political formations.

Sociology

A range of sociological perspectives emphasizing interdisciplinarity. Wide thematic reach, innovative and rigorous methodologies, global outlook; and a commitment to ‘critical’, theory-building research.
