CETUC is an internationally-renowned research centre dedicated to the training of postgraduate students in communications engineering with close interaction from industry and is an associated unit of the Department of Electrical Engineering at PUC-Rio. The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a four-year PhD in electrical engineering which includes courses in the first year followed by three-year specialised PhD research activities.
Communications engineering is recognised as a key discipline that will underpin future economic growth in most countries. Brazil is an emerging economy with substantial research and development activities in the telecommunications sector. In particular, Rio de Janeiro is one of the leading research centres in Brazil with many high-tech companies and government institutes which require specialised training in the area of communications engineering.
The PhD Programme
The programme will address diverse challenges ranging from theoretical to applied research. The first year provides training through courses in the specialized areas of communications engineering. Language courses are provided by PUC-Rio at no extra cost for the students enrolled in the programme. This will cover the skills necessary to enable you to undertake cutting-edge research in your PhD. It comprises the following areas:
A topic for the PhD will be selected from a wide range of options towards the end of the first year and will normally build on the first year's courses and on the student interaction with prospective supervisors. Students will be able to choose their PhD topics from a wide range of proposals, some of which will be collaborative with industry and write their dissertation in English. The PhD programme will also include a wide range of workshops and conferences.
CETUC participates in the Graduate Programme of Electrical Engineering offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering at PUC-Rio, one of the top research-led universities in Brazil. CETUC is located in dedicated space offering a high-class working environment, close to some of nicest areas and beautiful beaches in Rio de Janeiro. It has access to excellent test and measurement facilities in wireless communications, applied electromagnetics and signal processing. Students will become members of a research group with a team of academics and experience researchers.
Studentships are available to applicants from any nationality. The studentships cover tuition fees and provide a stipend that corresponds to about US$ 1000 per month. Candidates should apply online at http://www.puc-rio.br/ensinopesq/ccpg/inscricoes.html.
