The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Established in 1991, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a world-renowned research-focused university. Capitalizing on the well-established disciplinary foundation (Science, Engineering, Business, Humanities and Social Science, and Interdisciplinary Programs) on the Hong Kong campus; the HKUST Guangzhou Campus is targeted to open in September 2022 and will engage in a cross-disciplinary academic exploration to nurture well-rounded graduates with a global vision, strong entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking.

In concert with the preparatory work for the establishment of the Guangzhou campus, HKUST has rolled out a Pilot Scheme Admission on Hong Kong campus for HKUST(Guangzhou) to start enrolling research postgraduate students (RPg) since 2019/20.

Generous Scholarships Available for PhD Studies

HKUST provides generous scholarships for students to pursue full-time PhD studies, covering tuition fees, accommodation fees and living costs.

For Admission to Hong Kong Campus:

  • Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS): An internationally recognized award for PhD students established by the Hong Kong Government. The application will be closed on 1st December 2021. HKPFS awardees will receive:
    • Stipend: HK$322,800 (~US$41,400) per year for 4 years;
    • HKUST RedBird PhD Scholarship: A Recruitment Scholarship of HK$40,000 (~US$5,100) in the first year and an Academic Excellence Scholarship of HK$20,000 (~US$2,550) per year, in the following years, subject to the academic performance; and
    • Conference Travel Allowance: HK$13,500 (~US$1,730) per year for 4 years.
  • Postgraduate Studentship: HK$216,360 (~US$27,700) per year for up to 4 years for full-time PhD students.
  • RedBird PhD Scholarship:
    • A Recruitment Scholarship for new PhD students, with HK$40,000 (~US$5,100) and a waiver of tuition fee in the first year.
    • An Academic Excellence Scholarship for current PhD students, in recognition of their outstanding performance and research capacity, with HK$20,000 (~US$2,550) per year, in the following years subject to the academic performance.
  • Guaranteed University Accommodation: For full-time PhD students in the first two years of research studies at HKUST.
