Fully-Funded PhDs in Environmental Science

Fully-Funded PhDs in Environmental Science, 2020 Start Date

INSPIRE (the Interdisciplinary Southampton Partnership for Investigators Researching the Environment) is a NERC-funded DTP providing a world-class multidisciplinary training environment to augment specialist skills gained during research. The INSPIRE partnership is led by the University of Southampton and is run together with a large number of academic and non-academic partners. PhDs can be hosted at the University of Southampton, the National Oceanography Centre, the British Antarctic Survey, the Marine Biological Association and the Natural History Museum.

Benefits of doing your PhD in INSPIRE will include working with leading world experts, the ability to undertake placements around the world, and acquisition of widely-relevant skills. INSPIRE will equip environmental scientists to excel in their chosen field, to thrive in interdisciplinary research teams, to apply cutting edge technology to environmental research, and to act as ambassadors of global environmental issues to industry and society. We will train students in research, professional and transferable skills within world-leading research teams to enable them to develop as future leaders. The main scientific themes of INSPIRE are:

  1. Oceans and climate
  2. The dynamic Earth
  3. Interaction of organisms with the global environment.

Further information on training is here, a list of projects is here, and details on eligibility and how to apply are here.
