Funded Arts and Humanities Studentships at Northumbria University via the Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership

Northumbria is part of the AHRC-funded Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership, a collaboration of seven universities in North East England and Northern Ireland dedicated to offering world class training to its students. Membership of the Northern Bridge Consortium allows PhD students based at Northumbria to carry out doctoral research with an AHRC studentship funded for 42 months. The next intake of Northern Bridge Consortium students at Northumbria will be in October 2023.

Northumbria is offering AHRC-funded PhD opportunities across a broad range of Arts and Humanities disciplines:

• Library and Information Studies
• Design
• Architecture: History, Theory and Practice
• History (including American Studies)
• Music
• English Literature (including Creative Writing)
• Linguistics

Northern Bridge students at Northumbria will benefit from being part of a larger AHRC-funded student cohort, and will be able to join networks, access shared training, and harness expertise across the Consortium. Northern Bridge studentships cover your fees and provide a stipend to cover living expenses. Students can access further financial support for training and research expenses, and for additional costs relating to a placement.

Your first step is to contact the Subject Area Lead in your disciplinary area. Their contact details are in the web link below. Your Subject Area Lead will help you find an appropriate supervisor for your project.

To apply for a Northern Bridge Consortium studentship at Northumbria, you must first apply for a PhD place with us through our standard application procedure, for which the deadline is 10th January 2023. Prospective applicants are asked to make informal contact with us no later than 9th December 2022. Following application, successful candidates will be nominated for entry into the Northern Bridge studentship competition.
