Quantum computing provides unprecedented means to overcome bottlenecks of complex problems. The greatest impediment to realising the potential of quantum computing is lack of people power. End-to-end solutions take years to develop and require skills outside traditional quantum engineering and physics. They require Quantum Informatics: enabling the use of quantum technology ways that are interoperable and impactful.
The QI CDT will train a new generation of students in the interaction of quantum hardware, software, and applications. A cohort based 4-year PHD programme with integrated study offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary training that bridges computer science, mathematics, physics, and engineering. It equips students to tackle complex quantum challenges while considering their commercial and societal impacts.
Applications are now closed for September 2025 start. Details of the next application round will be announced later in the year.

We seek to foster an inclusive and accessible environment where everybody feels supported and respected. The CDT programme offers tailored support and flexible working patterns to meet individual student needs. Studies can be undertaken on a part-time basis to accommodate students wishing to combine their studies with work or personal responsibilities. All CDT studentships are fully funded and have provisions for sick pay, parental leave and disabled students support. We also provide individual coaching sessions to students from underrepresented groups to support their PhD journey and post-PhD career choices.
Funding covers tuition fees and a stipend for 4 years, and an individual budget for travel and research costs. Both UK and international students are eligible for the funding.
