Funded opportunities at the Max Planck School Matter to Life

“What, exactly, is life?", and "Can life-like processes, functions and objects be quantitatively simulated, predicted and created in the laboratory?" – join the Max Planck School Matter to Life to explore these questions!

The Max Planck School Matter to Life is a collaboration between Heidelberg University, Göttingen University, Technical University of Munich, RWTH Aachen University, Saarland University, Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials at RWTH Aachen, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), and different Max Planck Institutes.

We offer

  • A 5-year combined Masters + PhD program (2+3 years)
  • An exceptional and highly interdisciplinary study program
  • A network of excellence with world-renowned fellows
  • 3-week welcome course for our first year students and annual week-long summer schools
  • Mentoring program for the duration of the program
  • Full funding for up to five years including a generous stipend is available to both international and German students
  • All courses taught in English

Program Details

The first phase (Master study phase) of the program you spend at one of our three partner universities, depending on your choice of specialization:

  • Molecular Systems Chemistry and Engineering (Heidelberg University),
  • Complex Systems and Biological Physics (University of Göttingen) or
  • Bioengineering (Technical University of Munich).

The universities share a core curriculum with classes that are taught in state of the art connected classrooms. Laboratory rotations to associated institutions during the master's phase of the program are encouraged and the students are supported in building their own research networks in this highly interdisciplinary area. All students are given a mentor to guide them through the program.

After you have successfully completed the master's program, you can continue with a 3-year PhD program under the supervision of one of the school's associated fellows.

Who are we looking for?
