EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Distributed Algorithms

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Distributed Algorithms (DA CDT), has 15 fully-funded PhD studentships available from October 2022.

All of our projects have been co-defined with our industry partners. You could be working on projects with Dstl, GCHQ, Unilever, IBM and many more! (We have 19 unique partners).

If you’re looking for a PhD journey that involves working on real-world issues and helping our partners to solve real-life problems, in a cohort and supportive environment, then this CDT is for you. As well as flourishing in our community you will also: -

  • Receive a generous stipend to help with your living costs
  • Engage in training and development opportunities including a 3-6-month placement with your industrial partner
  • Get to visit the internationally-leading supercomputing centre, STFC’s Hartree
  • Have access to state-of-the-art computing hardware from IBM Research
  • Receive interdisciplinary cohort training and development experiences delivered by Alan Turing Institute
  • Be the proud author of a relevant, insightful and accomplished thesis at the end of your PhD programme!

About us

The DA CDT is funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the University of Liverpool and our project partners, working alongside STFC Hartree and the Alan Turing Institute.

What qualifications/knowledge do I need?

We would love to hear from you if you have obtained a bachelor’s or Masters degree in any of the following subjects: Computer Science, Data Science, Electronic Engineering, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, or any other numerate subjects. However, we don’t expect all of our applicants to have experience in both data science and high-performance computing and also welcome applicants that have a passion for Future Computing and Data Science.

Application Instructions, Deadlines, Eligibility, Funding and FAQs can be found on the CDT website.

“The DA CDT process was the best application process I undertook. Inclusive of the many job applications I completed during my undergraduate.”

Cohort 3 Student

Hear from our current PhD Students

Theofilos, Cohort 1 CDT student

“Being a CDT student gives me the opportunity to do my PhD as part of a cohort which means that I learn not only to accomplish things on my own but also I learn the value of being a member of a team.”

Theofilos, Cohort 1 CDT student sponsored by MBDA

Elinor Davies, Cohort 2 CDT student

“When I was searching for a PhD position, I was keen to join a CDT. I wanted to be part of a cohort and to have the opportunity to learn from others’ expertise and to share experiences and results. I wanted to work on this project because I have a background in Physics and Computer Science. I had developed an interest in data science, in particular, how it could be used to solve real-world problems. I was also keen to study in Liverpool, a city with such a rich history and such vibrant cultural opportunities.”

Elinor, Cohort 2 CDT Student sponsored by Leonardo

Kieron, Cohort 3 CDT student

“I chose to join the DA CDT because I came from a Physics background and knew how helpful it would be to be surrounded by people from lots of different backgrounds, where everyone is able to pitch in and help.”

Kieron, Cohort 3 CDT student sponsored by NSG

If you would like an informal chat with our students to find out what life’s like here at the DA CDT, you can contact them here. See our current academic and industrial supervisors.

“Be ambitious, believe, make a difference.”
