Get paid to do postgraduate study! South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) funding

Get paid to do postgraduate study!

The South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) offers funding of up to £20,000 per year for you to undertake postgraduate studies.

Why should I apply for SeNSS funding?

  • You will be paid to study for either a Masters plus PhD, or a PhD.
  • You will be guided by excellent supervisors and receive high quality advanced research training.
  • You will be part of a postgraduate group spanning 10 universities and 13 social science disciplines.
  • You will make connections with our influential external partners including government departments, industry and NGOs.
  • This funding and these connections will help you launch your career.
  • There is additional financial support for fieldwork, international study visits, and language training.
  • These studentships are offered by SeNSS, which is funded by the Economics and Social Research Council.

What options are available to me?

  • Full-time and part-time study.
  • Fully-funded studentships (tax-free living costs at approximately £15k per year, plus London weighting where relevant, and tuition fees of £4k+ per year) for UK and eligible EU students, and international Economics students.
  • Fees-only studentships (tuition fees of £4k+ per year) for EU students who have lived in the UK for less than three years.
  • You can either:
    • Create your own research proposal (student-led studentship), or
    • work on a project devised by your supervisor and an external partner (collaborative studentship), or
    • Work on an inter-disciplinary Environment and Social Sciences project devised by your supervisor (joint SeNSS-ARIES studentship).

Am I eligible?

  • Residential criteria: Fully-funded studentships are open to UK and EU students who have settled in the UK with no restrictions on their length of stay, and who have been a UK ‘ordinary resident’ for 3 years prior to 30 September 2020, and who have not have been residing in the UK mainly for the purpose of full-time education. Studentships are not available to international applicants except those applying for Economics.
  • To apply for a Masters plus PhD you will need: qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a first or upper second class honours degree.
  • To apply for a PhD only you will need: qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a Masters degree with distinction or merit, that includes relevant research methods training.
  • To apply for funding to complete your current PhD: please check our website.
