Get paid to do postgraduate study!

The South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) offers funding of £20,000+ per year for you to undertake postgraduate studies.

Why apply for SeNSS funding?

  • You will be paid to study for either a Masters plus PhD, or a PhD.
  • You will be guided by excellent supervisors and receive high quality advanced research training.
  • You will be part of a postgraduate group spanning 10 universities and 13 social science disciplines.
  • You will make connections with our influential external partners including government departments, industry and NGOs.
  • These connections will help you launch your career.
  • There is additional financial support for fieldwork, international study visits, and language training.
  • These studentships are offered by SeNSS, which is funded by the Economics and Social Research Council.

What options are available?

  • Full-time and part-time study.
  • Fully-funded studentships (tax-free living costs at approximately £15.6k per year, plus £2k London weighting where relevant, tuition fees paid in full for the duration of your funding award, and access to additional funding for overseas fieldwork, language training, and/or other research training; pro-rata for part-time students) for successful applicants.
  • To apply, you can either:
    • Create your own research proposal (student-led studentship),
      or
    • Work on a project devised by your supervisor and an external partner (collaborative studentship), or
    • Work on an inter-disciplinary environmental science and social sciences project devised by your supervisor (joint ESRC-NERC studentship).

Are you eligible?

  • Residential criteria: Fully-funded studentships are available to all prospective students across all 10 SeNSS universities and 13 SeNSS disciplinary and cross-disciplinary Pathways. However, there are a limited number of studentships available to international students (approximately 10-15 studentships per year). Please check UKRI’s website for the full residential criteria.
  • To apply for a Masters plus PhD you will need: qualifications or professional experience equivalent to Bachelor’s degree with honours.
  • To apply for a PhD only you will need: qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a Masters degree, which includes relevant research methods training.
  • Funding is available if you have recently started your PhD - please check our website for eligibility.
