Graduate Teaching Assistant opportunities available within the Department of Sport

The department of Sport is situated within the College of Health, Wellbeing and Lifesciences at Sheffield Hallam University and conducts research activity in a number of key areas:

  • Physical Activity, Wellness and Public Health
  • Sports Industry
  • Sports Engineering
  • Sport and Human Performance

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 67% of our research was rated as world-leading and internationally excellent (4* and 3*), with 100% of our research environment judged to be 3* or 4*.

Our innovative and applied research is funded through research councils and charities grants, in addition to investment from companies and organisations in the sport and physical activity industry. Staff have well-established national and international collaborations with academics and industry/clinical partners. We have a community of approximately 45 postgraduate students in sport and physical activity who are at the heart of contributing to our research output. All doctoral students are supported by a comprehensive programme of doctoral training and encouraged to present their research findings at national and international conferences.

We have four Research Groups within the Sport and Physical Activity Research Centre (SPARC) and welcome applications for research study in any of these areas.

Funding Opportunities

The Department of Sport at Sheffield Hallam University intends to appoint Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA's) on a 3.5 year fixed-term studentship from February 2021. Graduate Teaching Assistants undertake certain teaching duties associated with the student experience, in addition to working towards a PhD qualification.

The GTA studentships are for a period of three and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress, and will include full UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,285.

International applicants please note that the bursary will cover only the Home/EU fee. The shortfall between the Home and Overseas fee must be covered by the student for the 3.5 year duration of the studentship. We also have a mandatory English language requirement of IELTs 7, or equivalent language qualification. This qualification should have been taken within the last two years, with a score of at least 7 in all test areas.

As a minimum, applicants should possess a 1st or 2.1 Honours Degree in a related discipline. A Masters degree in a relevant subject area would be an advantage.
