Graduate Teaching Assistantships Available in the Biomolecular Science Research Centre

The Biomolecular Science Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University intends to appoint Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA’s) on a 3.5 year fixed-term studentship from February 2021 and include full UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,285.

Graduate Teaching Assistants undertake certain teaching duties associated with the student experience, in addition to working towards a PhD qualification.

As a minimum, applicants should possess a 1st or 2.1 Honours degree in a related discipline. A Master’s degree in a relevant subject area would be an advantage.

Closing date: 12 noon on 30th September 2020.

For these studentships, the PhD students will be registered for a PhD, alongside which they will contribute to up to 180 hours of support for research or teaching related activity per academic year. This activity forms part of the scholarship award and there is no additional payment for it.

Currently enrolled doctoral students are not eligible to apply.

The start date for the studentship will be February 2021.

Application Guidance

Applicants are requested to email a postgraduate application form (including a 1500 word proposal in section 8, the proposal should be tailored to the advertised project you are applying for. The proposal will be utilised to assess your ability to research the field of interest and propose a project plan. Applications should be submitted to HWLS-DoctoralAdmin@shu.ac.uk by 12 noon on 30th September 2020. Late applications will not be accepted.

Along with the proposal, please clearly identify:

  • the project with which you are applying

Selection process

Interviews will take place in early November 2020.

Applicants are required to give a 15 minute presentation followed by an interview. Interview panel members will include the Head of Research Degrees for the College or the Postgraduate Research Tutor for the BMRC and the prospective Director of Studies. Where travel to Sheffield is not possible, interviews may be conducted online.

Fees and Funding

The GTA studentships are for three and a half years, subject to satisfactory progress, and will include full UK/EU tuition fees and an annual stipend of £15,285.

International applicants please note that the bursary will cover only the Home/EU fee. The shortfall between the Home and Overseas fee must be covered by the student for the 3.5 year duration of the studentship. We also have a mandatory English language requirement of IELTs 6.5, or equivalent language qualification. This qualification should have been taken within the last two years, with a score of at least 6.5 in all areas.
