Heriot-Watt University, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences PGR Opportunities 2019

Fully-Funded PhD projects available for Autumn 2019 start

The School of Engineering & Physical Sciences (EPS) at Heriot-Watt University encompasses five Research Institutes undertaking world-leading research programmes across the traditional disciplines of Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Bio-sciences and Bio-engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. EPS is now offering a number of new PhD studentships from Autumn 2019, each providing full fees and stipend for 3½ years.

Our Research Institutes and their research themes are:

  • Institute of Chemical Sciences (ICS): Molecular Chemistry - synthesis, structure and reactivity; Materials Chemistry - composition, structure and properties; Dynamics and Structure - fundamental chemical and physical processes.
  • Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPaQS): Quantum technology; Quantum information; Quantum communications; Ultrafast Optics; Nonlinear Optics; Applied Optics; Lasers; Photonics in manufacturing; Optical metrology; Condensed matter with quantum dots and quantum gases.
  • Institute of Mechanical, Process and Energy Engineering (IMPEE): Energy Harvesting and Conversion; Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer; Biomedical Engineering; Computational and Digital Engineering.
  • Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems (ISSS): Microsystems; Microwave Engineering; Robotics, Signal and Image Processing; Smart Systems, Wireless Communications.
  • Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering (IB3): Quantitative Biophysical Interface Research in the biological and physical sciences and engineering: Cell Biology; Molecular Imaging, Atomic Force Microscopy; Tissue/Cell Culture and Bioprocessing; Lasers and Optics; Microfluidics.

Requirements

All applicants must have or expect to have a 1st class MEng, MChem, MPhys, MSci, or equivalent degree by Autumn 2019. Selection will be based on academic excellence and research potential, and all short-listed applicants will be interviewed (in person or by Skype).

Please apply using our online application system and please ensure that you state the name of either the academic that you would be interested in working with or the Institute that you would like to work in. You should also upload your CV, relevant transcripts and any other documents you feel would be relevant to your application.

Level of Award

The annual stipend will be the EPSRC norm, currently £15,009 with full fees paid, for 3½ years. Please note that due to eligibility restrictions these studentships are only available to UK nationals or students from EU countries who have Settled Status and have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the studentship.

See www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/eligibility for further details.
