Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme

The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, aims to attract the best and brightest students from across the globe to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong universities.

Starting from 2021-22 intake, CUHK provides selected HKPFS candidates with very generous scholarships covering the following:

  • A monthly stipend of HK$26,900 (approx. US$3,450) and a conference travel allowance of HK$13,500 (approx. US$1,730) per year during the normative study period
  • A tuition fee waiver for the whole normative study period
  • An award of HK$40,000 (approx. US$5,130) for lodging in the first year of study and HK$20,000 in the subsequent years within the normative study period
  • An on-campus hostel fee waiver in the first year of study
  • Guaranteed on-campus accommodation throughout the normative study period for HKPFS awardees who submit timely applications

Postgraduate Studentships for Research Postgraduate Studies (MPhil and PhD)

  • For full-time research postgraduate students
  • Annual studentship for 2021-22: HK$216,300 (Approx. US$27,730)
  • Payable during the normative study period

Postgraduate Scholarships

Reaching Out Award, Research Postgraduate Student Grant for Overseas Academic Activities and other funding schemes are available to support full-time MPhil and PhD students to conduct overseas academic activities.
