IBEC is a research institute covering most bioengineering fields, from basic research to medical applications, aiming to act as an international reference in this field. IBEC was established in 2005 by the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and has been awarded three times with the prestigious Severo Ochoa Excellence Award by the Spanish Ministry. Moreover, IBEC is also member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), a multidisciplinary research institute formed by the alliance of seven top research centers in Barcelona committed to creating a collaborative environment of multidisciplinary scientific and training excellence. IBEC is located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and hosts around 300 researchers and technicians, which are part of its own staff or are associated to the UB and UPC.
IBEC offers a unique environment for advanced training of pre-doctoral researchers, such as young and dynamic atmosphere with multidisciplinary and state of the art expertise on a large number of bioengineering fields, continuous training on technical and transferable skills, networking opportunities and career development. Indeed, IBEC organises training events such as the “Advanced Summer School Interrogations at the Biointerface” and the yearly IBEC Symposium, in addition to regular training sessions and weekly seminars. In this sense, it is worth to mention that on 2015, IBEC got the “HR Excellence in Research” Award from the European Commission, which reflects its commitment to continuously improve HR policies in line with the European Charter of Researcher and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.
Currently, there are three PhD vacancies available withing the framework of SPM4.0 project, a MSCA-DN project funded by the European Union and coordinated by IBEC. Within SPM4.0 network, the students will receive solid multidisciplinary scientific and technological training in advanced scanning probe microscopy and machine learning and in their biological and medical applications, as well as training on complementary and transferable skills. The three PhD students will get supervised by Prof Gabriel Gomila.
