The International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) is a partnership between Cancer Research UK, University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, University College London (UCL), Canary Center at Stanford University, and the Knight Cancer Institute at OHSU.
Earlier detection of cancer offers the greatest opportunity to deliver improvements in successful outcomes for patients. By diagnosing cancer earlier, it is easier to treat, causing less suffering to patients and could save lives. ACED aims to accelerate cancer early detection research by bringing together the best researchers across the UK and US.
We are seeking candidates with an outstanding academic record (minimum upper second class Bachelor’s, Master’s degree or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to early detection research, including but not limited to: biochemistry/molecular biology, computer science, engineering, epidemiology, public health, mathematics, medicine.
ACED is committed to training the next generation of early detection scientists providing a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional approach to training.
The first year of the Programme allows the successful student at each Centre to develop their project with their chosen supervisor, as well as identifying a suitable co-supervisor in a complimentary discipline from a different ACED Centre, followed by a 3-year research project. Training in different disciplines relevant to cancer early detection will also be provided.
ACED PhD students also benefit from:
Studentships will be available at each of the UK ACED Centres. Click the links below for more information and the list of approved ACED supervisors at each Centre:
Applicants may only submit ONE application for an ACED PhD Studentship and must select the Centre they wish to apply to.
Candidates must meet the research student eligibility requirements at the University they are applying to see individual Centre websites for details.
Due to funding restrictions, students must have UK “Home” status for fee purposes to be eligible (UK National or have EU “pre-settled” or “settled” status). Funding will not cover international fees and self-funding of the international portion of tuition fees will not be eligible. For more information on home fee status visit the UKCISA website.
Funding includes tuition fees at the UK home rate, as well as running expenses and an annual maintenance stipend funded by CRUK for up to 4 years, subject to satisfactory progress.
Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in early detection of cancer research.
To apply, complete the online application form. You will need to select a supervisor of your choice at the ACED Centre you are applying to and devise a brief outline for a research project based on their proposed research question as part of the application.
