Training
The Ker Memorial PhD Studentship will support a student to work on a collaborative project that brings together a wide range of approaches and techniques to bear on a range of key problems in infectious diseases.
As part of the studentship, the successful applicant will have access to a wide range of training opportunities in both technical and transferable skills. The University of Edinburgh has a strong commitment to providing a supportive and positive research culture, and students will be encouraged to join peers on cohort-based doctoral training programmes to build professional networks.
Studentship funding
All students will receive a stipend at UKRI levels (£18,622 per annum from 1 October 2023), plus £30K in travel and research funds across all four years of the Programme. All University fees will be covered.
Eligibility and entry requirements
The Ker Memorial PhD Studentship is open to UK applicants only.
We are looking for talented and motivated candidates who can demonstrate why they have chosen to study at the University of Edinburgh and apply for the particular project selected, and what skills and attributes they will bring to it. Typically candidates should have (or expect to be awarded), at least a good 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent.
Given the very broad remit of the projects being offered – from computational modelling to bioscience to bioethics – and the wide range of expected career paths our students will follow, we warmly welcome candidates with diverse academic disciplines, experience and interests. In particular we would like to encourage students from black and other minority ethnic groups to apply.
Start date
The studentship is available from 1 October 2023. However this date is flexible and a later start date can be discussed. It is also possible to undertake this PhD part-time over 8 years if this is more suitable for the successful candidate.
Interviews
Successful candidates will be interviewed in early August 2023. All candidates that are short-listed must be interviewed. Interviews are likely to be held online.
