King’s College London MRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) iCollaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (iCASE) Studentships in Biomedical Sciences

Application Deadline: Thursday 28th April 23:59

King's College London are seeking students of academic excellence to join our Health Faculties.

Health is a dominant and unifying theme at King’s College London which is internationally recognised for excellence in biomedical and health research and training. King’s is the academic partner of King’s Health Partners, one of the UK’s leading Academic Health Sciences Centres.

Industrial Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (iCASE) Studentships

4-year fully funded PhD positions are available for September 2022 entry, with successful candidates joining the MRC Doctoral Training Partnership. They will start their PhD project immediately in September 2022 and will participate in all other training and cohort activities of the MRC DTP.

About Us

The objective of our Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) is to select motivated and curiosity-driven students and provide them with outstanding training, tailored flexibly to their individual needs and interests. We will equip them with the intellectual and technical skills that are needed for undertaking cutting-edge biomedical research and complement this with key transferable skills (including public engagement, business development and entrepreneurship) to ensure that they emerge as well-rounded scientists, prepared for their next career stage (whether in research or outside). Our excellent clinical setting will ensure all students benefit from an understanding of the context of medical research, helping develop scientists with a strong translational ethos.

Projects

iCASE projects are a collaboration between an academic institution and a commercial or non-academic partner; offering a unique opportunity to receive high quality research training that bridges academic and industry partners. The MRC DTP are recruiting to PhD projects tackling key strategic skills shortages:

  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE1: Establishing a patient-derived hiPSC differentiation protocol to model development of neural crest cancers
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE2: Investigating in vitro and in vivo efficacy of antibiotic combinations with the small quinolone-like compound HT61 against pulmonary infections caused by MDR ESKAPE pathogens Pseudomon asaeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and MRSA
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE3: Impact of intermittent cold exposure on function of brown/white adipose tissue and metabolic consequences of obesity
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE4: Intestinal G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs): characterising gut GPCR-signalling with potential to treat colitis
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE5: META 2 - Measuring Erosive Toothwear Accurately
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE6: Advanced experimental and computational methods for optimisation of nasal drug delivery (by modifying respiratory mucus biophysics)
  • MRCDTP2022_iCASE7: Pathophysiological role of TRPA1in diabetic sensory neuropathy

Funding

Each studentship is fully funded for 4 years including tuition fees, a tax-free stipend of £20,562 (for 2022/23, and increases each year with inflation) and a generous annual allowance of £6,700 for research consumables and conference travel.

Residency Eligibility

Only applicants with Home Fee status are eligible to apply.

Academic Qualification Requirements

The programme welcomes applications from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants will be reviewed on qualifications, experience and potential to undertake a research degree.

The minimum entrance qualification is an Upper Second Class Honours degree in a relevant subject, or an equivalent overseas qualification. Applicants who do not meet the minimum entrance requirements may be admitted if they hold an alternative qualification of an equivalent or higher level in a relevant subject, or can prove relevant professional experience which demonstrates that the applicant can follow and complete the programme.
