LEVERHULME DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR THE ECOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE BRAIN (ECOLOGICAL BRAIN)

The Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme for the Ecological Study of the Brain (ECOLOGICAL BRAIN DTP) is an interdisciplinary programme that works towards an integrative science approach that brings together psychology, neuroscience, education, geography, computer science, engineering and architecture to bridge the gap between basic scientific discovery and the application of this knowledge.

We are now inviting applications to study the ECOLOGICAL BRAIN DTP starting on 25/09/2023.

You can apply for:

• a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship (2 studentships available);
• a self-/external funded place for a 3- or 4-year PhD programme.

Programme Structure

The programme can be studied as either a 3- or 4-year PhD programme.

3-year programme

Students select a primary supervisor and write a short project proposal as part of their application to the programme. Students will be based in the home department of their primary supervisor.

For the 3-year programme you need to have a clear idea on your supervisor and research project and we encourage you to get in touch with prospective supervisors as soon as possible. Please note, to be eligible for a studentship your primary supervisor needs to be based within the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences.

4-year programme (self- / external funded)

The 4-year programme includes a rotation year. This year consists of intense but personalised core training, including; basic scientific training (statistics, programming, neuroanatomy), bespoke training (e.g. different approaches and methodological training in real-world research) and research ethics. In addition to this, students will conduct three rotation projects under supervisors from different fields. These projects enable students to develop relationships and collaborations with various supervisors before deciding on a three-year PhD project, as well as allowing students to try new areas.

In the second to fourth year, students will follow the 3-year programme as outlined above.

Eligibility

Students must have achieved (or expect to obtain) at least an upper 2:1 in their undergraduate degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Geography or related discipline within the remit of the ECOLOGICAL BRAIN.
