MRC DTP and CASE Studentships in Global Health

Fully funded 4-year (1+3) postgraduate studentships

Applications for studentships for entry in autumn 2022 now open.

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and Lancaster University (LU) are pleased to announce that the call to apply for MRC DTP/CASE PhD studentships to commence in the academic year 2022-23 is now open.

The objectives of the programme are as follows:

  1. To develop future leaders in translational research relevant to Global Health.
  2. To develop researchers with quantitative and interdisciplinary skills.
  3. To develop bridge scientists who can translate scientific innovation into beneficial impact on health for the world's most vulnerable people and communities.

The structure of the programme allows extremely bright, enthusiastic individuals with outstanding track records from diverse academic backgrounds (e.g. medicinal chemists, molecular biologists, parasitologists, entomologists, pharmacologists, clinicians, mathematicians, economists, social and management scientists) to hone their research ideas, interests, and skills in the first year and, in consultation with PIs, to generate PhD work plans that are highly competitive and impactful.

We are seeking candidates with exceptional research credentials to work within active research groups based around project proposals submitted by LSTM and LU academic staff. Projects cover MRC skill priority areas and are drawn from across all of LSTM's four research departments and themes and topics and from the CHICAS and MPS research groups at LU.

Funding & Eligibility

Studentships will normally be offered on a 1 + 3 basis (1-year MPhil plus 3-year PhD), i.e. 4 years of study. Funding package includes programme fees, bench fees, stipend, and access to supplementary funding for additional training/placements.

Following an announcement by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), candidates of all nationalities are eligible to apply for an MRC DTP studentship (although limited studentships are available for students that cannot demonstrate ‘Home’ status) and successful candidates will be awarded the fees and stipend package that has previously been awarded to ‘Home’ candidates only.

Please refer to our Funding & Eligibility pages for further information.

Studentships are awarded based on academic excellence and performance at interview. As a minimum, applicants should hold a first class, or high upper second-class Honours degree (or equivalent) in an area relevant to the available MRC DTP/CASE research projects. Studentships awarded based on predicted grades will be conditional upon final results.

Where an applicant does not meet this requirement (e.g. they hold a lower second class undergraduate degree), they may be eligible to apply if they also hold a master's degree with an awarded distinction or equivalent (in an area relevant to their proposed PhD) and are able to provide an award certificate and transcript for both qualifications.
