Multiscale Models for Life (MM4L) Centre for Doctoral Training: second round now open for October 2024 entry (deadline February 29 2024) plus new funded projects available.

Are you interested in bridging the gap between in vivo biology, physical and computational sciences?

The aim of the King’s College London Multiscale Models for Life (MM4L) Centre for Doctoral Training is to understand the complex interactions within a functioning organism by modelling molecular and cellular biology at the tissue and organ level.

We address the three following themes:

Theme 1: System building integrates in vitro and in vivo model systems with bioengineering of microenvironments capturing tissue function. This builds upon our leadership and expertise in in vivo functional models with innovative engineering design principles.

Theme 2: System capture builds on emerging tools in high-resolution spatial biology transforming our understanding of physiological and pathological tissue interactions. We apply molecular analyses (chemical/metabolic, transcriptomic, proteomic) to multiscale spatial systems to qualitatively and quantitatively capture biological functions across tissues and time.

Theme 3: Virtual systems aims to model tissue behaviour and function, which is necessary for testing predictions and developing interventions. We will establish correlational networks across systems to draw universal multi-scale inferences. Information will be gathered across in vitro and in vivo systems, across patient-derived and genetic animal systems using computational, analytical and machine learning approaches.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal applicants for MM4L will be those with interest and aptitude for interdisciplinary research – i.e. life sciences + physics, chemistry, maths, computation or engineering. They will have an appreciation for biology in vivo, in vitro, in silico, and very good academic ability as well as good character and work ethic.

Leadership & Supervisors

The overarching aim of this CDT is to train a cohort of scholars adept at bridging the gap between in vivo life sciences and multi-scale modelling. We will do this with innovative projects proposed by collaborative supervisory teams of animal models biologists, computational biologists and bioengineers. Each project will involve at least two (and ideally three) of these disciplines.

We are developing a new seminar-style training module for students, which will be taught by cross-disciplinary teams. For example, each week, a biologist, a modeler and a tissue engineer partner up to discuss a fundamental problem, approached from their differing viewpoints.

Fees and funding

Support is for 3.5 years including a stipend at the current UKRI rate, home rate tuition fees, research expenses and support for training and career enhancement.

Eligibility: Home students are eligible. A limited number of fully funded studentships are available to international students.
