PhD studentship in Chronic Lung Disease Epidemiology

PhD studentship in Chronic Lung Disease Epidemiology

Applications are invited for a funded 3-year PhD studentship to start in January 2021.

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious candidate to conduct research on the epidemiology, prevention and health impact of chronic lung disease. We particularly welcome candidates with an interest in understanding the causes of lung function decline in low-income countries and the consequences of low lung function.

The successful candidate will be able to use baseline and follow-up data from the large multinational Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study. This is a population-based cohort study that, at baseline, collected high-quality post-bronchodilator lung function data and information on risk factors for disease from about 30,000 people from 41 sites, mostly in low- and middle-income countries (www.boldstudy.org). There will be opportunity to develop a study for new data collection. Other study data are available.

The studentship will be based within the Genomic and Environmental Medicine section at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London (Royal Brompton Campus). The successful candidate will work within a team of epidemiologists and statisticians with track record in the field of respiratory epidemiology and in the leadership of large population-based studies. Work will be supervised by Dr Andre Amaral (a.amaral@imperial.ac.uk), Lecturer in Respiratory Epidemiology.

The National Heart and Lung Institute provides an exciting environment, with state of the art facilities and excellent opportunities for PhD student training, including research seminars and journal clubs. In addition, the institute provides extensive collaborative opportunities with other research groups.

Imperial College London provides excellent opportunities for research students' training. All students benefit from a full programme of training in research and transferable skills organised through the Graduate School, whose quality has been recognised several times at the Times Higher Education Awards.

The studentship will be funded for three years, on a tax-free bursary of £18,000 per annum and paid tuition fees at the Home/EU rate. There is no provision for overseas student fees. In addition, a generous allowance is provided for research consumables and conference attendance.
