BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

University of Nottingham & Rothamsted Research BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Four year PhDs available in the research area Industrial Biotechnology & the Bioeconomy – Starting October 2019

The University of Nottingham, in collaboration with Rothamsted Research (RRes) and its consortium partners, have devised an integrated four-year Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) that provides PhD students with a world-class training programme in Biotechnology and Biological Sciences.

BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership

Approximately 50 projects are available to pick from across a range of topics and will be supervised by academic staff from multiple disciplines, including including Biosciences, Chemistry, Engineering, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology and Veterinary Medicine and Science. Consortium partners include: Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) National Industrial Biotechnology Facility; Crops for the Future Research Centre in Malaysia; Diamond Light Source; East Malling Research; and Research Complex at Harwell.

Project areas include:

  • biocatalysis and enzyme engineering (directed evolution, enzyme design) for the synthesis of high-value chemicals.
  • solving problems with product toxicity in microbial fermentations.
  • optimisation and production of biopharmaceutics/biologics and the use of bioconjugation to produce hybrid biomaterials.
  • sustainable bio-based manufacturing processes, including distributed manufacturing.
  • synthetic biology approaches to manufacture chemicals and biofuels.
  • stem cell biology and tissue engineering.
  • sensory science, brewing science/fermentation.
