NUdata Centre for Doctoral Training in Data Intensive Science

We have up to 8 fully funded PhD studentships available for entry in September 2024. These studentships are for 4 years and include full UK fees, a living allowance of £18,622 for 2023/24 full time study, and additional funding to cover research costs and national/international travel such as conferences. Students will undertake a PhD in STFC science (see project descriptions below), will do formal training in Data Intensive Science and will spend six months in an industrial placement.

The closing date for applications is Monday 31st January 2024 and we will confirm the outcome of awards before 31st March 2024.

NUdata offers a cohort-based training partnership between Northumbria and Newcastle Universities and is funded by STFC. Students will undertake an original PhD research project within the STFC remit (solar physics, astrophysics or cosmology) but will also be trained in data science techniques and will choose from 40+ partners in industry, charity or government for their placement.

NUdata’s vision is to create STFC scientists with the data science skills necessary to address the data challenges presented by both STFC science and broader society. This new generation of PhD-qualified data specialists will also have increased job prospects post PhD and will contribute to increased quantitative and technical skills in the Northeast of England, contributing to the government’s levelling up agenda. At the end of their PhD, students trained by NUdata will have the distinct advantage of choosing to become academics in astrophysics (broadly defined) or become industry leaders. Note that it is possible to apply for more than one research project, and the individual project descriptions will tell you how to do this. However, if you are interested in applying for both Northumbria-hosted *and* Newcastle-hosted projects, then you will need to submit two applications separately to each university.

Eligibility

You must have or expect to have a First Class or high 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject (physics, astrophysics, computer science, mathematics). Enthusiasm for research, the ability to think and work independently and within a group, excellent analytical skills and strong communication skills are essential requirements. International applicants are welcome to apply.
