Pat Harris 4-year PhD Studentships in Neurodegenerative Disease
The Queen Square Institute of Neurology is pleased to offer four 4-year basic science PhD studentships in the field of Neurodegenerative Disease starting in September 2020. This PhD programme is provided thanks to the generous legacy from Pat Harris, former Institute of Neurology Academic Registrar. It is designed to support students wishing to embark on a research career in the field of neurodegeneration and related subjects in translational neuroscience.
Programme Structure
In the first year of the programme, students are given the opportunity to develop an extensive range of knowledge and skills in various areas of translational neuroscience. This is achieved through attending a bespoke programme of taught activities based on the student’s previous experience, including courses in statistics, seminars, and taught modules of our MSc programmes.
In addition, students will complete three 10 week rotation projects in labs of their choosing, enabling students to develop relationships and collaborations with various supervisors before deciding on a three year PhD project. The rotation aspect has been very popular with our students as it gives students hands-on experience of research methods with which they may not be familiar.
Students will embark on their 3 year PhD project at the end of year one, after submitting a PhD proposal. Students will be expected to take a lead role in developing their project proposals, and will have the opportunity to link together the studies undertaken during their lab rotations to pursue novel, exciting avenues of research.
Funding
This is a fully-funded four year PhD programme, which covers Home/EU tuition fees and offers a generous stipend starting at £18,000 per year, as well as travel (£2,000 total for years 3 and 4) and consumables funding (£1,000 in year 1 and £5,000 per year for years 2-4).
Eligibility
Students must have achieved at least an upper 2:1 in their undergraduate degree. An MSc is not a pre-requisite.
Overseas students may apply but will receive funding at Home/EU rates and will need to show evidence of their ability to pay the fee shortfall for the full four years of study (as guidance only, this is currently approximately £19,000 per year).
