If you are interested in the structure and function of cells, tissues and organisms, you will find your niche at IMG. We study molecular mechanisms in a wide-range of model systems including viruses, stem and germ cells, haematopoiesis, immune system, cancer models, and animal models – mainly mice, fish, chicken.
IMG has 27 research groups and several state-of-the-art core facilities and research infrastructures housed in two major locations 10 min apart by a bus or a shuttle, the main building (opened 2007) on the Krč Biomedical Campus in Prague and in the Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre (BIOCEV) in Vestec (opened 2015). Together, we are more than 300 scientists; half of us are graduate and undergraduate students.

PhD students are the key component of our community, shaping the atmosphere at the institute and defining its scientific output. Our priority is to offer a PhD programme that will attract outstanding students and provide them with quality training in molecular, cell & developmental biology, immunology, genetics, and virology. Our PhD community has 123 students from 19 countries and IMG is committed to developing the best possible working conditions for the ever-growing community of non-Czech natives.
PhD activities at IMG include IMG Bootcamp (a three-day career development event for new PhD students), participation in institute’s seminars and courses, IMG PhD conference (an annual event organized by PhD students), happy hours, and socializing events. PhD student representatives directly communicate with the IMG management, so any issues can be promptly addressed. Student benefits include an income covering living expenses (individually negotiated with supervisors), a subsidized catering, on/site dormitories, and a fitness centre.
Please note: According to the Czech law, prospective PhD students first find their PhD supervisor and then enter a university-administered PhD programme. IMG PhD students are mostly administered by Charles University, one of the oldest European universities (est. 1348).
Students interested in conducting their PhD research in IMG groups can choose up to three groups for interviews and apply through a simple online application form.
Application deadline is February 28th, 2019
On-site IMG Interview day is March 22nd, 2019
Selected applicants are interviewed either on site during the IMG Interview Day or via Skype. If successful, they are offered a position and they proceed to be admitted into a PhD study programme at Charles University.
