PhD @ IMG in Prague
Institute of Molecular Genetics (IMG), Czech Academy of Sciences
If you are interested in the genetics, genomics or bioinformatics, structure and function of cells, tissues and organisms, you will find your niche at IMG. We study molecular mechanisms in a wide-range of model systems including viruses, stem and germ cells, haematopoiesis, immune system, cancer models, and animal models – mainly mice, fish, and chicken.

IMG has 26 research groups, , numerous state-of-the-art core facilities and 4 national research infrastructures housed in two major locations 10 min apart by a bus. The main building (opened in 2007) is located in the Krč Biomedical Campus in Prague and another part is situated in the Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre (BIOCEV) in Vestec (opened in 2015). Together, we are more than 300 scientists and around half of us are students.

PhD @ IMG
PhD students are the key component of our community, shaping the atmosphere at the institute and defining its scientific output. Our priority is to offer a PhD programme that will attract outstanding students and provide them with quality training in molecular, cell & developmental biology, immunology, genetics, and virology. Our PhD community includes over 100 students from 20 countries and IMG is committed to developing the best possible working conditions for the ever-growing community of non-Czech students.

PhD activities at IMG include IMG Bootcamp (a career development welcome weekend for new PhD students), participation in institute’s seminars and courses, IMG PhD conference (an annual event organized by PhD students) and many socializing events. PhD student representatives, elected by the PhD students, directly communicate with the IMG management, so any issues can be promptly addressed. Student benefits include a subsidized catering, on/site dormitories, and a fitness centre. Besides the stipend from the university, every PhD student also receives a salary as IMG employee. According to the Czech law, prospective PhD students find first their PhD supervisor (e.g. a PI at IMG) and then enter a university-administered PhD programme. IMG PhD students are mostly enrolled at Charles University, one of the oldest European universities (est. 1348).
Admission procedure
Students interested in conducting their PhD research at IMG can choose up to three groups for interviews and apply through a simple online application form.
Application deadline is March 1st, 2023
IMG Interviews (online and onsite) will be held on March 27th-28th, 2023
Selected applicants will be interviewed. If successful, they will be offered a PhD position and they will proceed to be admitted into a PhD study programme at Charles University.
