We have a portfolio of fully funded studentships aligned with national flagship investments in the digital design and manufacture of medicines. Studentships will be hosted and based at the leading Universities of Strathclyde, Leeds, Loughborough and Sheffield. CMAC is a globally leading hub for medicines manufacturing research and training, hosting a portfolio of flagship programs in world-class facilities for medicines manufacture. It has seven Tier 1 members that partner in our research, and over 30 technology providers and innovation spokes.

CMAC is leading on the development of cutting-edge digital design and modelling tools, alongside integrated production and supply chain systems to address the future needs of patients, consumers and industry. Health systems worldwide are pressed to deliver better medicines to more people with tightening budgets in a more sustainable way. CMAC is transforming medicines manufacture, development and supply and specifically addressing these major pharmaceutical goals via the use of digital twins, continuous manufacturing and digitally enabled, integrated end-to-end processing (MicroFactories).

The PhD Training Opportunity at CMAC

We are offering the opportunity of up to 12 fully-funded PhD studentships, for research projects aligned to the newly awarded prestigious EPSRC programs:

1. Made Smarter Innovation Digital Medicines Manufacturing Research Centre (DM2), and
2. International Centre to Centre of Digital Design and Manufacture of Amorphous Pharmaceuticals (DDMAP)

The 12 projects will span areas of data science, AI, formulation, autonomous drug substance, drug product manufacturing and testing applied to the two projects outlines above.

Our current research projects are in collaboration with our seven global Pharmaceutical company partners (AstraZeneca, Chiesi, Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Roche, Takeda and UCB) in addition to academic partners: Universities of Bath, Cambridge, Copenhagen, Ghent, Imperial College London, Leeds, Loughborough, Nottingham, Sheffield, and The Glasgow school of Art.

Researchers working on CMAC projects have a great opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in world class facilities, explore academic and industrial collaborations, and receive multidisciplinary training and mentoring from our industry partners that will help them develop into sought after industry ready graduates. The structure of a PhD project with CMAC includes a period of initial training and familiarisation with the Research Centre’s activities.

Information on Application Process

CMAC is looking for motivated candidates with a background in chemistry, physics, pharmaceutical science, material science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar, to undertake these projects. You will need to have a passion for research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and collaboration with industrial stakeholders.

The offered studentships cover home tuition fees, research/training costs and provide a monthly stipend for 3.5, or 4 years. Candidates eligible for home fees are UK nationals, Irish nationals, applicants with a settled or pre-settled status in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme, and applicants with indefinite leave to remain in the UK. We also welcome applications from EU or international candidates who can provide evidence of their ability to fund the fee difference.
