PhD opportunities in Chemical Sciences

Chemical Sciences are included in Doctoral School at Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland, which is regarded to be the first research university in Poland among universities of technology according to domestic rankings. This programme concerns the following disciplines:

  • chemistry
  • materials engineering
  • biomedical engineering
  • chemical engineering

The programmes include obligatory and facultative courses which highlight basic science as well as well applied sciences, and also lectures by visiting professors from various fields and countries, who will share their knowledge and experience in their respective research areas.

The scientific topics covered in chemistry and chemical engineering are: different fields of chemistry, polymers, biologically active compounds, methods of analytical chemistry, diagnostic methods, anticorrosion technology, nanomaterials, chemical engineering technologies as well as functional food. The most active research areas in which PhD students run their projects are within pure and applied chemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering, environmental sciences, chemical technology, and food sciences. The programme provides the background in the fields of general chemistry, biotechnology and chemical technology, ranging through a wide plethora of industries, to enable PhD students to develop their own ideas and concepts, as well as creative problem solving skills. The programme includes teaching practices and domestic or international internships.

In Materials engineering advanced engineering and cutting-edge science meet. Materials engineers create, test, and assess known and new materials for special industrial and manufacturing applications. The PhD students research how to design and manipulate the structure and properties of materials. With a solid base in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, they add to specific engineering knowledge in nanotechnology, electroceramics, biomaterials, conducting polymers, advanced semi- and superconductors, photovoltaics, non-destructive testing of materials and many more thrilling fields.

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary science covering some aspects of modern chemistry, molecular biology and pharmacy, including designing and synthesis of new pharmaceutics, developing new methods and techniques for the detection of a broad spectrum of diseases. The students also have opportunities to investigate the molecular mechanisms of diseases necessary for the identification of drug targets. The PhD students have access to well-equipped laboratories.

Education is conducted in English and lasts four years. All PhD students at our School receive regular fellowships (around 3200 - 5200 PLN per month) and additionally may apply after admission for the second one granted individually from university (around 2500 PLN per month). There is no tuition fee.

Application:

In order to apply for admission, candidates have to select and contact prospective supervisor and register at our web-page. Process of admission includes application evaluation, acceptance by prospective supervisor, an interview and requires from a candidate to have an official certificate of English (at least B2 level), recognized by the school. Enrolment for AY 2024/2025 will start on April 22, 2024. All other details are given at our web-page.
