PhD opportunities in Physical Sciences

Physical Sciences are included in Doctoral School at Gdańsk University of Technology, Poland, which is regarded to be the first research university in Poland among universities of technology according to domestic rankings. This programme concerns the following disciplines:

  • physical sciences
  • materials engineering
  • biomedical engineering
  • automation, electronics, electrical engineering and space technologies

The research in physical sciences comprises experimental and theoretical physics, atomic and molecular physics; organic optoelectronic devices; optically anisotropic materials; light and charge particle interactions with atomic and molecular systems; computational methods in atomic physics; relativistic effects in atoms; photophysics of light-harvesting molecular systems; quantum information theory; applied acoustics and other.

Materials engineering is where advanced engineering and cutting-edge science meet. The students research how to design and manipulate the structure and properties of materials at the macroscopic and atomic level. The research includes advanced ceramics engineering; physical properties of materials; biomaterials; nanostructures; non-destructive testing; polymer and soft matter engineering; materials for medical applications; materials and systems for energy harvesting and storage; modelling etc.

Biomedical engineering covers some aspects of modern chemistry, molecular biology and pharmacy, including designing, synthesis and biosynthesis of new pharmaceutics, developing new methods for the detection of a broad spectrum of diseases. The students have opportunities to investigate the molecular mechanisms of diseases necessary for the identification of drug targets. The lectures are delivered by the faculty members and visiting professors.

The research in automation, electronics, electrical engineering and space technologies covers: energy conversion; different fields of electronics and system designing; systems state and parameters estimation; computational intelligence; fractional order modelling and control; modelling of biological processes in wastewater systems; control systems; detection, classification and protection of ferromagnetic vessels; mechatronics systems; technologies of diamond, carbon, electronic and biomedical materials; construction of optical fibre sensors; control and industrial diagnostics;

The PhD programme aiming at teaching innovative, novel techniques and implementations focused on engineering aspects of the chosen discipline. It covers a wide spectrum of topics and includes obligatory and facultative courses and visiting professors’ lectures. The programme provides background, allowing them to develop their own ideas and creative problem solving skills.

Education is conducted in English and lasts four years. All PhD students at our School receive regular fellowships (around 3200 - 5200 PLN per month) and additionally may apply after admission for the second one granted individually from university (around 2500 PLN per month). There is no tuition fee.
