PhD Research Projects in Control and Systems Engineering

PhD Research Projects in Automatic Control and Systems Engineering

Join a unique department with world-leading research - ranked number 1 in the UK for research output (Research Excellence Framework, 2014).

Why Control and Systems Engineering?

Control and systems theory is at the heart of engineering. It plays a crucial role in modern science and technology as well as economics, management, biology and even politics. At the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield, we believe no other branch of engineering has a wider impact or more potential to contribute to the future prosperity and economic competitiveness of the UK. The UK Government has recently identified robotics and autonomous systems as one of eight “great technologies” which will propel future UK growth.

PhD Research Projects

The Department's intensive research activity allows us to continually offer a wide range of PhD projects. We structure our research under three strategic themes: Complexity, Intelligence and Autonomy, across four application areas: Aerospace & Transport; Energy & Environment; Life Sciences & Healthcare and Manufacturing & Robotics. These are contained within three research groups, led by senior academics and supported by post-doctoral researchers. You can view our full list of PhD projects on our website. Please note, you are welcome to discuss alternative research topics with project supervisors.

“Being a member of ACSE gives me an excellent opportunity to follow the latest technologies in my field of research by attending different conferences and seminars run by experts. Moreover, being supervised by two inspirational members of ACSE staff, who do not hesitate to provide support makes me more determined to succeed.” - Ahmed Azab, ACSE PhD student.

Our Research

Our vision is to carry out theoretical and applied research to address challenges posed by the complexity of natural and man-made systems as well as the demand for higher levels of autonomy and intelligence of future engineering systems. Our research collaborations take us into almost every industry from Aerospace and Transport to Energy and Environment; from Life Sciences and Healthcare to Manufacturing and Robotics.

During the REF 2014 exercise, we ranked 3rd in the UK for overall research excellence and were 1st for quality of research publications - placing us ahead of Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, University College London and Kings College. Overall 98.5% of our publications were assessed as either world leading or internationally excellent in terms of their originality, significance and rigour.

You will be in high demand

Control and systems engineering has widespread impact on many industries including, weather forecasting, economic system modelling, financial forecasting and the analysis of geological and medical data - so career opportunities are excellent.

There are too few control and systems engineers to meet the demands of employers, so you’ll be in demand in a buoyant careers market. 100% of our PhD graduates are in graduate level employment six months after finishing, with an average starting salary of £35,500 (DLHE, 2017).
