PhD Scholarships in Discrete Optimisation at Monash University

PhD Scholarships in Discrete Optimisation at Monash University

Research at Australia’s most innovative university*

The Faculty of IT at Monash University is seeking exceptional PhD candidates to join cutting-edge Cybersecurity projects led by world-class experts. We specifically encourage applications from candidates who want to work on projects with a positive social impact.

Monash is known for world-leading research in discrete optimisation. We have developed the leading modelling language MiniZinc, used by thousands of people in industry and academia, to solve pressing real-world challenges. We continue to develop state-of-the-art solving technology for discrete optimisation.

Working with many industrial and commercial partners on innovative solutions to complex decision problems, our applications have a strong emphasis on Optimisation for Social Good. Examples include improving work conditions through rostering that uses detailed fatigue modelling and helping the UNHCR prioritise their spending to meet complex funding conditions.

Our current key focus areas are:

  • single-agent and multi-agent path planning
  • explainable artificial intelligence
  • predict + optimise where we learn how to predict values that will lead to the best optimisation result
  • optimisation of energy use and energy systems, and optimisation for social good.

Monash is the only university out of the prestigious Group of Eight to have a dedicated IT faculty rated ‘Above world standard’ across all categories in Information and Computing Sciences. We also received five out of five forAI and Image Processing and are home to the largest data science research group in the southern hemisphere.

Generous scholarships and living stipends

We are looking to fill several openings for generous scholarship packages with dedicated opportunities for women in IT, candidates from low socio-economic backgrounds and other underrepresented groups. Dedicated funding is also available for Indigenous Australian students.
