PhD Student Opportunities 2023

Begin your academic career with us at the Babraham Institute! We are looking for the scientific pioneers of the future.

At the Babraham Institute we carry out world-leading innovative research into the molecular mechanisms that underlie normal cellular processes and functions. A particular focus is how we age and studying the underlying mechanisms controlling this process, for example how older people respond differently to infection compared to the young. To answer these questions we examine the regulation of gene expression, the control of cell function by signalling processes and the complex cellular interactions that produce an effective immune response.

Students will join our thriving scientific community situated on an attractive parkland campus near Cambridge, with friendly and welcoming colleagues, cross-organisation social events and dedicated postgraduate committee. Our supportive and inclusive postgraduate community is made up of around 50 graduate students. In addition, all students are members of Cambridge University Colleges and also able to participate in University social and academic life.

Students work alongside experienced scientists with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. You will learn experimental techniques and acquire new abilities in critical thinking, experimental design and hypothesis-driven investigation. Throughout your degree you will experience the collaborative environment, with seminars spanning all research areas, have access to all of our outstanding science facilities, and have the opportunity to network with industry companies that form the wider Babraham Research Campus community.

As well as supporting you to become a world-class experimental scientist, the Institute provides many opportunities to gain transferable skills that can help you towards success on a range of career paths.

More information about our PhD programme including experiences of current students, can be found on our PhD page.
